What a free hotel night actually costs
A points balance only means something once you know what a night costs. This is the math I run before I move a single point — how many points a night takes at the five programs my cards can reach, what each point is worth, and where a "free" night still comes with a bill.

Still the one I aim for. A published chart means I can plan a trip before I have the points.
Marriott Bonvoy
Biggest footprint, so it's usually where the family-sized room is. Book five nights and the fifth is free.
Hilton Honors
You need a lot of points, but they're easy to earn and the fifth night is free on a standard-room award.
IHG One Rewards
Holiday Inn Express with free breakfast and a pull-out couch has saved more of our trips than anything fancy.
Wyndham Rewards
Simple tiers and cheap overseas nights. Pricing moved to four tiers (5,000 / 15,000 / 30,000 / 45,000) in September 2026.
Hyatt's chart, category by category
This is why I start people at Chase. Hyatt still tells you the price up front. In May 2026 it moved from three price levels to five, so each category now spans from its cheapest nights to its most expensive ones.

A Category 1–4 free night certificate works at any property in those categories, no matter which price level the date falls into — which is exactly why I hold the Hyatt card.
Where a free night still comes with a bill
This is the part that catches people, and it changes the real cost of the stay.
Waived on award nights
Hyatt and Hilton don't add resort or destination fees when you pay with points. The room rate is genuinely the whole bill.
Left up to the hotel
Marriott lets individual properties charge a resort fee on award stays. Read the booking page: $50 a night across five nights is $250 you didn't plan for.
Charged either way
IHG properties with resort fees, and Wyndham resorts and vacation clubs, generally still bill them on award nights. Parking and extra-person charges are never covered anywhere.
Free night certificates from cards
An annual certificate is the quiet way a fee pays for itself. One night usually covers the whole thing.
World of Hyatt Credit Card ($95)
One Category 1–4 night every year, plus a second after $15,000 of spend

Four rules I use before I redeem

Do the cents-per-point math before you book
Divide the cash price by the points it costs. If a $300 night costs 20,000 Hyatt points, that's 1.5 cents a point — good. If it costs 90,000, it isn't, and I pay cash instead.

A big balance isn't a big trip
100,000 points means something completely different at Hyatt than it does at Hilton. Compare programs by the night you can book, never by the balance on the screen.

Check the fees before you call it free
Hyatt and Hilton waive resort fees on award nights. Marriott lets each hotel decide, and a $50-a-night destination fee on a five-night stay quietly costs you $250.

Points aren't the only way to pay
When a night prices badly, that's information — not a reason to spend anyway. Save the points for the trip where they cover $2,000 of hotel instead of $200.
